[edit]DescriptionWIKITONGUES- Irina speaking Artsakh Armenian.webm |
English: This video was recorded by Kristen Tcherneshoff in Stockholm, Sweden, where she and Irina met at Wikimania 2019. Armenian is spoken by over six million people, primarily in the South Caucusus nation of Armenia, and the Republic of Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, a de facto independent state between Armenia and Azerbaijan. A member of the Indo-European linguistic family, Armenian shares genealogical roots with languages across Europe and Asia. However, unlike most Indo-European languages, Armenian doesn't pertain to a discernable sub-family like Romance, Germanic, Slavic, or Indo-Aryan languages do. Armenian is also written with its own unique writing systems, the Armenian alphabet and Armenian Braille for visually impaired speakers. In this video, Irina speaks two varieties of the language, standard Artsakh Armenian, spoken primarily in Stepanakert, the Artsakh Republic's capital, and the Hadrout (Hadrut) dialect of the country's east.
