[edit]DescriptionW.T. Pike Contemporary Biographies London (illustrations) (95a).jpg |
Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike, including "London at the opening of the Twentieth Century". (Pike's New Century Series no.15). Published in 1905 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton. The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). Each volume has an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, and an index to the biographies. The London volume was available to subscribers as sections of the whole: this section covers bureaucrats: actuaries and insurance, accountants, and secretaries. Showing a photograph titled: Town Hall, Rotherhithe. Architect J. Murray, F.R.I.B.A. It was designed by Murray & Foster, and completed in 1895. Due to a merging of councils, it became a library and museum in 1905. It was damaged by bombing in World War II, and demolished around 1948. The caryatids which once adorned one of the entrances are still standing. J. Murray was Irish architect John Murray (1864–1940). |
