Description
Nederlands: De spreiding van het kenmerk (het aantal doden in de VS op snelwegen/interstates) is gefaked, maar berust op het werkelijk aantal doden (42.636) in 2004, en een snelwegenlengte van 50.000 mijl. Er is uitgegaan, om een voorbeeld te hebben, dat dit aantal doden over de staten evenredig is met het aandeel van de snelweglengte in die staat maal (de bevolking in die staat)^(0,5), en dat het aantal doden per staat gelijk verdeeld is over alle snelwegen in die ene staat, rekening houdend met de lengte van de individuele snelwegen. Deze aannames zijn behalve aanvechtbaar ook discutabel. Snelwegen bij steden zullen meer doden kennen. orde van grootte is echter reeel, daarmee kan deze kaart als voorbeeld dienen voor cartografische doeleinden, maar niet voor VS-illustraties.
English: Map of the number of traffic deaths on freeways/interstates in the United States. The distribution of the deaths to specific roads is fake, but based on the actual number of deaths (42,636) in 2004, and a road length of 50,000 miles. For the sake of example, the deaths have been allocated to the states based on a formula that's unlikely to match reality. Thus, this may be a useful example of a particular style of map, but not very useful for illustrations of the United States.
