Description |
English: View of the Bay of Naples with Admiral Byng's Fleet at Anchor, 1 August 1718 This oil painting, which was executed on a copper plate, has been connected to Admiral George Byng’s victory over the Spanish fleet off Cape Passaro. In the background Naples can be identified through the recognisable architectural forms of Castel Nouvo on the harbour. The bay, seen in an almost birds-eye view, is filled with vessels of the English fleet, some ships already at anchor, others arriving. The overall manner of the picture is undistinguished and stylized and most attention is certainly paid to the cityscape. The painting is signed. The NMM collection includes a second view of Naples by Butler (BHC1902). |
