Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnthank graveyard - geograph.org.uk - 736818.jpg |
English: Unthank graveyard. This old graveyard is at the site of the former Over-Kirk of Ewes that was abandoned at the Reformation. There were three Kirks in Ewesdale before the Reformation, one was at Ewes Doors dedicated to St Paul, one at Unthank dedicated to St Mark, and the last was at Kirktoun, known as Lower or Nether-Kirk of Ewes and was dedicated to St Cuthbert. (Source: The Ewes Valley by Brenda I. Morrison and R. Bruce McCartney).
Many of the gravestones are encrusted in moss and lichen, but the memorial inscriptions are contained in the Ewes Valley book. There is a mixture of table-tombs, headstones, obelisks and enclosures, with many dating back to the early 18th century. There is a Dumfries & Galloway Council notice on the fence surrounding the graveyard warning the public about potentially unstable headstones. See 736740. |
