Notes
  • Significance: Pavilion II is one of the ten pavilions which face the Lawn, the original central grounds of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Along with the four other pavilions which stand on the East Lawn, Pavilion II was designed by Jefferson in the course of fifteen days in 1819, when he was seventy-six years of age. The structure was substantially completed by 1821. Pavilion II is notable for its undisputed authorship, its adaptation of the dimensions and details of an ancient Roman temple, its architectural innovations, its finely carved exterior and interior entablatures, its list of distinguished residents, and its situation as part of one of the finest architectural ensembles in America.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-260
  • Survey number: HABS VA-193-H
