English: The U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser USS Belknap (CG-26) is silhouetted against the setting sun off the Dardanelles as it makes for the Mediterranean Sea on 3 August 1989. Belknap was scheduled along with the guided missile cruiser USS Thomas S. Gates (CG-51) and the guided missile frigate USS Kauffman (FFG-59) for a historic visit to the Soviet Black Sea Fleet Headquarters of Sevastopol. However, she was redeployed after the reported murder of Marine Lieutenant Colonel William R. Higgins in Lebanon. |
