AND PHILADELPHIA. 85 Philadelphia* The city of Philadelphia, as laid outby William Pent), in 1681, by a grantfrom Charles II., comprised only thatportion of the present city situated be-tween South and Vine Streets and theDelaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Settle-ments were made, however, outside ofthese boundaries, and in the course oftime they became separately incorporatedand had separate governments, making acongeries of towns and districts, the wholegroup being known abroad simply asPhiladelphia. Several of these were sit-uated immediately contiguous to the cityproper —viz., Southwark and Moyamen-sing to the south, and Northern Liberties,Kensington, Spring Garden and Penndistrict to the north, and West Philadel-phia to the west—all of which were practi-cally one town continuously built up.
