Description

English: the Castellano Tower, which hosted the statues of the Uffizi during World War II to protect them from conflict.

Beautiful construction grown around a longobard watch tower, transformed in the 10th century by the Guidi accounts into a garrison, which housed a garrison for the control of the important communication routes that connected Florence to Arezzo and Rome, in the 12th-XIV centuries played a major role in the power struggles of the time and Florentine exiles from both sides often took refuge there during the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellini. From the 14th century, lost the military function, it was transformed into a stately home by the Castellani Counts from which it took its name. In 1751 the Castellani counts were counted among the Florentine patricians and the Tower was gradually transformed into a villa. He then passed through several owners undergoing a progressive decline until, in 1938, began an important restoration work by the current owners, on project and under the supervision of the Superintendence of Monuments of the Province of Florence , which brought it back to its former glory.

During World War II, statues of the Uffizi were housed in the castle to defend them from the conflict.
