Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Torness: inside the sea wall A constitutional battleground? There is a lot of reclaimed land lying unused within the sea wall at Torness. Obviously the intention of the planner was to install further reactors as has happened at other sites. The post Three Mile Island unpopularity of nuclear energy has held up such development, but now that nuclear is seen as a stopgap replacement of carbon generating fossil fuel energy supply, Torness B could be a reality. There is however a problem (other than waste disposal which always gets kicked into the long grass marked "the future"). The current government of Scotland opposes nuclear energy and has power over planning. The government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, wishes to see nuclear power stations built in Scotland and has informally threatened to end the deadlock by taking planning powers away from Edinburgh. Watch this space. Meanwhile it is worth remembering something, should the ice caps start to melt. This land was once beneath the high water line.
