Summary
[edit]DescriptionTomb of Omar Makram, El-Megawreen Necropolis.jpg |
English: Tomb of Sayyid Omar Makram (b. 1750-1822), Egyptian political and resistance leader during the French Expedition (1798-1801).
The tomb, which lies in the El-Megawreen cemetery of the Northern Necropolis, belong to Omar Makram's family. However, at the time of visiting the site, it was unclear to me whether Omar Makram is indeed buried here or in another more-monumental grave further south in the grand Northern Necropolis of historic Cairo. Cairo's famous El-Megawreen Necropolis extends between the funerary complexes and Sufi lodges of Sultan Barquq, Emir Kabir Qurqumas and the domes of Asfur, Yunus Al-Dawadar, Barsbay and El-Bagasi, Emir Sulayman, and other Mamluk sites dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries CE. This tomb and many others in El-Tahawi, El-Megawreen and other famous cemeteries of historic Cairo are destined to be demolished as part a new governmental effort to upgrade Cairo's network of roads and bridges, dubbed "Cairo 2050", an urban intervention announced in 2009 and accelerated since 2013. This tomb is expected to be demolished in the planed urban intervention. |
