[edit]DescriptionThuricola DSC 1332.webm |
Contraction and recovery of Thuricola, a sessile ciliate, with a vase-shaped lorica (shell). The cell has a "lid" that it uses to block the opening to its lorica when it is retracted. The ciliate contracts into its lorica when disturbed (achieved here by tapping on the microscope stage). Date: 18 Aug 2011 Location: Singapore Botanical Gardens, Eco-Pond. Pond with plenty of suspended matter among tangles of cyanobacteria and water plants at muddy margin. Microscope: Bright-field with closed condenser aperture. Camera: Nikon D7000 Collector: Brandon Seah |
