The three-dimensional model of the extinct baleen whale skeleton Cetotherium riabinini.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The video demonstrates a model of the Cetotherium riabinini skeleton - one of the smallest whales that existed on our planet. This whale occurred in the territory of modern Ukraine in the late Miocene (9.8 - 7.6 million years ago), when the continental sea (the eastern Paratethys) was poured here. The head of the Cetotherium was a third of its length, and the skeleton itself reaches 2.7 meters long. Probably, this whale was a fish eater. The skeleton was found in 1930 near Mykolaiv, and in 1948 it was defined as a new species by Hofstein, I. D. However, a detailed description of this whale was made by Pavlo Gol'din with colleagues only in 2013. Currently, a specimen is exhibited at the National Museum of Natural History at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where it was scanned using a surface scanner. The Sternum, a hyoid bone, and reduced pelvic bones were scanned using computed tomography, as result, they are discolored. Based on scans, a 3D skeleton model was made.
