Highsmith Archive.; Gift; The Lyda Hill Foundation; 2014; (DLC/PP-2014:054).; The hotel opened in 1927 and it counted Hollywood stars and celebrities such as Amelia Earhart among its famous guests. The hotel fell on hard times for lack of patronage, closed in the mid-1980, and stood empty and deteriorating for years. In 2014, a new owner, Captain McCurry ("Captain" is his given name), a Rio Grande Valley transplant from Virginia, has not immediately disclosed plans for the landmark.
