Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is the grave of a young woman only married two years before she died in the Shreveport Yellow Fever epidemic of 1873, recently commemorated in Shreveport, as it was the 150th anniversary of that event. Across from the grave is the Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium, also a famous landmark in Shreveport built in 1929. It is a beautiful building and has been used in recent years primarily as a music venue. It famously was the site of the Louisiana Hayride. The Hayride became famous because it was the place where Elvis became well known because it was broadcast live on the radio, in the 1950's. Other big stars played there as well, such as Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, and Tillman Franks. The yellow fever epidemic was a major event, killing over 800 people in two months, which was about one fourth of the population. It was the 3rd largest in the country and on a percentage basis probably the worst. Oakland Cemetery is a national registered historic place, I believe.
