Description
English: The historic first arrival of the steamship Great Western in New York Harbor, April 23, 1838. Great Western was the first vessel to establish a regular transatlantic steam service. Other identifiable vessels in this painting include the Long Island Sound steamboat New York, and the steamboats Sun, James Madison (foreground) and Massachusetts (background, directly behind the Madison).[1]
