Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Pendley Chapel, Church of St. John the Baptist, Aldbury - geograph.org.uk - 1579244.jpg |
English: The Pendley Chapel, Church of St. John the Baptist, Aldbury. The origins of The Church of St. John the Baptist, Aldbury, date from the 13th Century, until the Dissolution its patrons being the Abbot and Canons of Missenden Abbey in Buckinghamshire. Following the Dissolution, the College of the Bonhommes at nearby Ashridge was suppressed, which led in 1575 to the transfer to Aldbury of the tomb of Sir Robert Whittingham (slain in 1471 at the battle of Tewkesbury) and his Lady, which now rests in the Pendley Chapel, shown here. Others buried in the tomb are Sir John Verney (d.1546), husband of Margaret and heir of Sir Robert Whittingham, his wife and his son Sir Ralph Verney and Anne his wife.
The Chapel is segregated by the fine parclose shown here. See also . . . . 1579232; 1579234; 1579235; 1579237; 1579239; 1579240; 1579241 |
