Description

The Green River winds its way south through the monument; flowing in from Wyoming, it continues to flow south into the desert, and joins the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park.

The Colorado portion of Dinosaur National Monument is made up of the gorges formed by the Green River, but it is inaccessible at this time in mid-March due to snow.

Here in the Utah portion, where I am just outside the famous dinosaur bone quarry, the river flows away and forms sandbars at the curves; 149 million years ago, similar sandbars, along a river that had far more water flow than today's Green, ended up getting a large deposit of dinosaur carcasses that were buried and preserved, and one of them has become today's dinosaur fossil quarry.
