English: The Grave Of Maroen Henderson The inscription on this gravestone reads:
"HERE LAYES THE CORPSE OF MAROEN HENDERSON SPOUS TO JAMES LINDSAY MILMAN IN THANKRTOUN. HER AGE....." The rest of the inscription has been lost. THANKRTOUN would be the modern Thankerton, which is just a few miles away. Maroen or her husband must have been prominent people in this area, to have the grave marked by such a beautifully carved stone. The winged skull on this side of the stone demonstrates human mortality. The winged soul on the other side reflects the immortality of all good God-fearing Christians. |
