Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe German Hospital - geograph.org.uk - 1482118.jpg |
English: The German Hospital Seen here from Ritson Road, the German Hospital was first opened in 1845 with twelve beds to cater for London's substantial German immigrant community. It continued in this role - inpatients had to be German speakers - for almost 100 years. It survived the First World War, despite the widespread anti-German attitudes at the time, but in the Second World War the entire nursing staff were interned on the Isle of Man as potential spies. In 1948 the hospital became part of the NHS, and was latterly used for psychiatric and elderly mentally ill patients. It was closed in 1987 and subsequently converted into flats. |
