Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; According to the Montrose Press newspaper, "Despite the chilling effect of the stock market crash two days earlier, the Fox Theatre opened to warm reviews from Montrose residents on Halloween night, Oct. 31, 1929. Against a bright orange background with lettering done in heaven blue and silver, the words, "All Ye Who Enter Here, Leave Worldly Cares Behind," greeted movie-goers. The Fox opened with 'They Had to See Paris,' starring the famous American humorist Will Rogers." The Fox was designed in a Moorish style by architects Dick Dickson and Montana S. Fallis of Denver. Externally, it has an æonionÆ dome and a minaret, both of which survive despite modifications to the lower part of the facade. Later known as the Fox Cinema Center, it is a three screen cinema showing first run attractions.
