English: At the top of the page :
This song is by and for a London musicians' society, in glory of Bacchus (god of wine) and Venus (goddess of love), after the Greek poet Anacreon. The members of this society could continue to drink wine, if they were able to sing this song. The tavern where they sang was probably at Arundel Street, in the Strand. The music was reused with other lyrics in two patriotic songs, with no relation to drunkenness or sex: the former anthem of Luxembourg, and the present anthem of the United States of America.
