Summary

[edit]
Author
Edward William Cooke
Description
English: The 'Dreadnought', with barges and other vessels, possibly in the Thames at Greenwich, and with a sketch of S. Cousins and J. H. Robinson on the reverseThis comprises two slight sketches in pencil, one above the other with Cooke's characteristic single pencil-line inner borders, mounted on a sheet with the three other items above. Both bear his MS annotation 'Dreadnought', the mastless bulk of the ship being surrounded by Thames barges and other vessels, with slight indications of a shoreline in the centre in the top sketch and to left and right in the bottom one.

Although a MS annotation by John Munday on the mounting sheet says 'Greenwich' - a reasonable inference since that is where the 'Dreadnought' hospital ship was certainly stationed (1827-56) - there is no evidence of a specific location in the drawing itself other than that provided by the Thames craft present. More interesting perhaps, is a slight sketch on the reverse of two recumbent men, which Cooke has inscribed 'S. Cousins and J. H. Robinson Esqrs / a group in Petersham Meadows', presumably the engraver Samuel Cousins and the engraver/publisher Robinson, whom he would certainly have known. It is mounted with PAE5459, PAE5461 and PAE5462.
