DescriptionTexas & Pacific Railway Plot of the Town of Arlington, Texas 1878 (1913) UTA.jpg |
English: While building west from Dallas to Fort Worth in 1876, the Texas and Pacific Railway Company had the site of present Arlington surveyed and platted, as seen in this, the town's earliest existing plan, the original of which is located in the Tarrant County Central Records, Book 388, p. 26, Tarrant County Archives, Fort Worth. The checkerboard grid pattern with regularly-spaced streets running perpendicularly east-west and north-south is typical of many towns throughout the United States that were established in the nineteenth century primarily thanks to the presence of a railroad. |
