English: Arms of Tennant of "Byrkys" (Birks, in Starbotton ?, 11 miles N-E of Giggleswick, North Yorkshire) (and of James Tennant of Westham, Essex, 1634): Ermine, two bars sable each charged with an annulet or (Heraldic Visitation of Essex, 1634, p.500[1]). A Latin inscription (now lost) formerly appeared in a stained-glass window in Giggleswick Church: Orate pro bono statu Ric(ard)i Tennant et Margerett uxoris eius de Byrkys procuratori istius ecclesi(a)e et filiorum filiarumque eorum qui istam fenestram fieri fecerunt a(nn)o d(omi)ni mccccc decimo octavo ("Pray for the good condition of Richard Tennant and Margaret his wife of Birkes, procurator of this church and of their sons and daughters qui caused this window to be made in the year of our lord 1518"). Also published in Thomas Dunham Whitaker's History of Craven, 1805, p.128[2][3]. One of Richard's sons was Augustin Tennant of Starbotton in the parish of Kettlewell, Craven, Yorkshire, who married Margaret Catterall of Newhall, Craven.
