Mr Charles Ammoun, Lebanese Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, presented Dr Vittorino Veronese, Director General of UNESCO, with a tapestry donated by his Government to the new UNESCO Headquarters. This tapestry Les Signes de Cadmus, will decorate the Director General's Office. It has been designed by Mr Aref Rayess, Lebanese painter who has spent a long time in Paris. The tapestry represent the legend of the Greco-Phoenician here Cadmus who founded the City of Thebes and to whom the Ancients attributed the introduction of the alaphabet in Greece. It symbolizes the mutual influences of the Orient and the Occident and its various motives are surrounded by signs of the Phoenician alphabet, such as a wind-horse, a Lebanese cedar-tree, the sun, the moon, the fish and the navigators. The format of his tapestry is 382 cm and 160 cm and has been executed in Lebanon, at Mme Sakah Labaki's studio
