Additional Notes | No one can possibly claim to understand the plight of Palestinians without knowing something about the thousands of prisoners Israel is holding in its jails; under administrative detention for undetermined or unlimited periods of time; without charge; and with little if any access to legal representation, family visits, or hope for a fair hearing in court. The accepted estimate of the number of prisoners is 11,000, but the real number is likely higher due to the dozens of people Israel routinely arrests during its daily forays. Today, we have the privilege of discussing children detainees with our featured guest, Mr. Gerard Horton. Gerard Horton is an Australian lawyer working as an International Advocacy Officer for Defence for Children International - Palestine Section (DCI/PS). Mr.Horton first went to Palestine in December 2006 as a volunteer for Addameer, a Palestinian prisoners' rights organization. He returned to Palestine in August 2007 volunteering with DCI/PS and started in his position as International Advocacy Officer in January 2008. He joins us by phone from his office in Palestine. As Horton reports with unforgettable precision, Palestinian children are routinely arrested in the middle of the night, imprisoned, kept in isolation, interrogated, abused, and tortured till they sign confessions in a language they can't even read. |
