Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This graphic shows the same T2 decay as before, but now all the individual proton dipoles are shown extending from the origin and we are observing from the positive Z-axis. The graphic better demonstrates how the many dipoles, when aligned, result in a large net dipole. However, as their slightly different Larmor frequences cause them to drift apart, they lose their alignment and cause the XY-component to decrease.

To recap:

In the case of T1 decay, if too many proton dipoles start pointing in the Z-direction, the sum of the XY-components of the individual dipoles are too small to be measured, even if they're aligned. In the case of T2 decay, if too many proton dipoles are pointing in different directions, the individual dipoles will cancel each other out, even if they're mostly sitting along the XY-plane. In reality, both phenomenon result in signal attenuation.
