Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Nicholas Church, Withernsea (geograph 1838426).jpg |
English: St Nicholas Church, Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The original church was built in 1488, and abandoned in the early 17th century after the roof was destroyed in a storm. Visitors to the newly founded seaside resort were shocked by the ruin and subscribed for the restoration which was carried out by the celebrated Victorian architect Cuthbert Brodrick in 1858-9. The chancel is built of stone, but the rest of the church is of local cobble collected from the beach. |
