Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's church Otley Suffolk (3337627649).jpg |
St Mary's Church, Otley, Suffolk, mural monument of John Gosnold (1568-1628) of Otley, 3rd son of Robert Gosnold of Otley, by his wife Ursula Naunton "born of the ancient and right worthy families of Naunton and Wingfield of Letheringhham", thus apparently a daughter of Henry Naunton of Letheringham by his 1st wife Elizabeth Ashby, a daughter of Everard Ashby of Loseby, Leicestershire. She was thus sister of Robert Naunton (c.1563-1635), MP, "whose grandfather (William Naunton) entered the service of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk", and was elected a MP for Boston in 1547, having married "a lady of the powerful Wingfield family" (she was a daughter of Sir w:Anthony Wingfield (d.1552) KG, MP, of Letheringham, Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household in the reign of Edward VI, of the Wingfield family of Wingfield Castle in Suffolk, ancestors of the Duke of Suffolk), who in 1553 had received a grant of Letheringham Priory in Suffolk. (NAUNTON, Robert (c.1563-1635), of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Letheringham, Suff. and Charing Cross, Westminster Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1604-1629, ed. Andrew Thrush and John P. Ferris, 2010[1]). John Gosnold was an Usher in Ordinary to Queen Elizabeth I and was also a courtier to James I and Charles I. He married Winifred Windsor (by whom he had 5 sons and 3 daughters), a daughter of Walter Windsor (3rd son of William Windsor, 2nd Baron Windsor (1498–1558)) by his wife Margaret Pole, a daughter of Sir w:Geoffrey Pole (1501/2-1558) of Lordington, Sussex, 4th son of w:Sir Richard Pole (d.1505), by his wife w:Margaret Pole, 8th Countess of Salisbury, and the younger brother of w:Henry Pole, 1st Baron Montagu and of Cardinal w:Reginald Pole. Margaret Pole was the only surviving daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, a brother of Kings w:Edward IV and w:Richard III. All of which ancestry is inscribed on the monument. HeraldryArms:
