Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Spur Lake This is an eastern extension of Clamerkin Lake, which dries out at low tide and is part of the Newtown National Nature Reserve providing excellent opportunities for seeing wading birds. Here it is filling as the tide comes in. It extends into the square, in which all of the permanent land (from the first tree line) is classified as a military danger area because of a rifle range to the south-east. The small hill is Shepherd's Hill, just in SZ4392, which is the centre of the danger area. The range was installed during WW1 and is probably arranged so that stray bullets will go harmlessly into this rising ground instead of into the Solent beyond.
