Notes
  • Significance: The building was constructed about 1895 at the Spur Ranch headquarters in western Dickens County. The Spur Ranch was organized in the early 1880's by A. M. Britton and S. W. Lomax, and was sold to the S. M. Swenson and Sons Land and Cattle Co. in 1908. S. M. Swenson was a pioneer in Texas, arriving in 1829. During the Civil War, after building an empire in land and mercantile trade, he moved to New York City. In the 1870's his sons came back to Texas and established the huge SMS Ranch. The most unique feature of the granary is a pair of chutes which allow gravity to deliver grain into a feed box near the stalls below. The structure, donated by Mr. A. C. Swenson and Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Barron, Jr., was moved to the ranch headquarters museum in 1971.
