Description |
English: Sketch of the recent discoveries on the northern coast of America by Captain M'Clintock RN in search of Sir John FranklinSingle sheet, lithograph with hand colouring of explorers' routes. Scale approximately 1:1 500 000.
During an expedition in the 'Fox', paid for by Lady Franklin, Leopold McClintock and his companions found remains of Sir John Franklin's 'Erebus' and 'Terror' expedition on King William Island. This map locates the find-spots of human remains and personal possessions, a boat and two messages left in cairns. The messages included the co-ordinates where the ships had been beset and abandoned and McClintock plotted these on the chart. An inset shows the 'probable route of the Franklin expedition'.
There is a handwritten note at the top of the chart, 'Officers Library Greenwich Hospital with Mr. Allen's Compliments'. |
