Description |
English: Sea astrolabe, Dutch manufacture, dated 1626, probably purchased by Carl Gustaf Wrangel (1613-1676).
An astrolabe is operated by holding the instrument (which weighs about 5 kg) at arm’s length with one thumb through the top ring. The sights are turned until the Pole star is visible through both of the sight holes. The height of the Pole star above the horizon can then be read on the graded scale. With the help of grade tables and other height measurements, such as the sun, the ship's position can be determined. In order to measure the sun's height, the astrolabe is held against the ship's deck to capture a beam of sun through the two sight holes. In practice, the instrument was awkward to use and not particularly reliable. |
