Notes
  • Significance: It was designed to provide berthing space for naval vessels on inactive status after WWII. It also provided support facilities for personnel attached to the installation. Located on the west bank of the Sabine River, the facility initially included piers, wharves, shops, warehouses, administration buildings, and eventually housing and recreational facilities. Construction was initiated in 1946 by Brown and Root, Inc., from architectural and engineering designs provided by the regionally significant consortium of Cummins Stone and Shutts. The facility was one of fourteen such berthing bases in the United States and the only one on the Gulf Coast. It was used until 1960 by the Atlantic Reserve Fleet and provided storage for approximately 200 ships...
