Summary

[edit]
Description Drawing by Roger de Gaignières (d.1715) of stained glass window circa 1235 in Chartres Cathedral of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester (d.1265). The person depicted could be one of several members of the de Montford family, identifiable by the arms and heraldic banner, the identification made by Gaignières to Simon is entirely conjecture, but has become accepted by tradition.[1] It has been contested by Armancourt (Armancourt V. M. comte d’ -, « Chartres. Notes héraldiques et généalogiques », in Bibliothèque de l’Ecole des chartes, 1910, volume 71 (pages 345-346), Société archéologique, Chartres, 1908), Prinet (1910) (Prinet Max, « Revue bibliographique sur le livre d’Armancourt », in Bibliothèque de l’Ecole des chartes, volume 71 (pages 345-346), 1910) and others. Next to this window (Chartres Cathedral, Choir, South Clearstory, bay 110) is a very similar window showing his brother Amaury VI de Montfort, Constable of France (Chartres Cathedral, Choir, South Clearstory, bay 108) (see similar drawing by Gaignières, "Référence bibliographique : Gaignières , 101" [2]) (Amaury de Montfort (1192 – 1241) was the son of Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester and Alix de Montmorency, and the brother of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. ) In 1230, Amaury succeeded his uncle Mathieu II of Montmorency as Constable of France.
