Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Siccar Point. This place is of great significance in geology. In 1788 James Hutton(1726-97), on a boat trip accompanied by his friends,Sir James Hall of Dunglass and Professor John Playfair the mathematician, found evidence here for his Plutonic theory of the origin of the earth. He noted the gently sloping younger red sandstone rock lying on top of near vertical greywacke. Ever afterward this has been known as Hutton's Unconformity. Playfair also made a valuable contribution to geology with his study of glaciology. In the background is Abbs Head.
