Summary
[edit]DescriptionShingon-in chapel at the Heian Palace.tif |
English: This 1626 painting by Sumiyoshi Jokei is a copy of an earlier work. The original was painted by Tokiwa Mitsunaga c. 1160. Created with ink and color, the 45cm image is printed on a paper handscroll. This is the fourth painting on its scroll, which is the sixth scroll in the Nenjū gyōji emaki series (Annual Rites and Ceremonies of the Imperial Court).
The work is set at the Shingon-in, a Buddhist temple located in the Heian Palace near the emperor's quarters. It depicts monks of the Shingon sect, altars, mandalas, and hanging artwork.
