Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sheepfold north of Sundhope Kipp. The remains of one of three sheepfolds possibly associated with shieling huts built at a later period in the shelter of the ramparts of the Sundhope Kipp hill fort (visible behind) http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/59057/details/sundhope+kipp/

The unusual thing about this and several other disused (apparent) sheepfolds in these hills 1374052 is their location (on the tops of the hills), that the low bank doesn't seem to have been made with stone, and has no entrance. Is this a distinctive local variant, an extinct type common in some, unknown past time? Surely, unless they have been subsequently dismantled and all the stone removed, they could only have worked if topped by a wooden stockade fence. Canmore confers with this as a sheepfold but gives no further details http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/136097/details/sundhope+kipp/

A friend recently suggested these might be the class of objects known to archaeologists as 'stack stands': a sub-circular or sub-square raised platform on which winter fodder was stored to dry, common in the uplands and upland fringe http://www.durham-pa.gov.uk/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PGlossary?readform&GLOSSARY=stack+stands
