Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A postcard with the postmark Dec 1906, titled "Second Ave and Cherry Street, Seattle, Wash"

Ahead on the right is the old Hoge Building, originally known by the unwieldly name of the Washington Territorial Investment Company Building when completed in 1890, it was torn down in 1909 for the present-day building which was completed in 1911. "Union Savings & Trust Company" has been written over the awning, leaving a clue - why did it need to be written?

The Hoge_Building Wikipedia article] on the Hoge is very murky on dates and tenants. We need other evidence.

A UW photo shows a blanked out awning circa 1908, as the building nears its 1909 demolition date. The street clock of L. L. Moore (visible here in profile) is present of course. He moved it further north on 2nd with his store when the Hoge was rebuilt.

An earlier shot of the Hoge at MOHAI shows the Seattle PI offices still at the Hoge in 1903. The PI was also here in 1897 when the first gold was brought back from the Yukon. They ran a nice article about Joseph Mayer, the manufacturing jeweler who worked upstairs. He smelted the gold down to bricks, probably on contract with the assayers office. His office was lined with lead to prevent fire from spreading to the building and papers down below.

Mayer didn't import that clock for L. L. Moore, but he was surely involved in its resale as it moved between owners. And he later became famous for manufacturing his own clocks. Like all of the clocks in the photo postcard of 4th and Westlake in 1946.
