scollop

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A scollop used in thatching in Ireland, made from hazel. The thatcher cuts the hazel rods fresh, i.e. either the evening before or the morning of the day making them. The rods are split once or twice, depending on thickness, the tips sharpened and then the middle twisted and bent. The scollops are stuck into the thatch and hammered in with a mallet and used to hold the stretchers. The stretchers are made the same way without the bending. Upright stretchers/ scollops can be used to hold material on the roof before it gets used, for example sheaves of thatch to avoid having to go down and up the ladder too many times. This hazel rod was cut in Cullahill Wood, Co. Laois and made by the photographer under instruction of master thatcher Matty Kelly.
