“Waterloo 1st mo 16th 1853
Dear Brother Richard
As we did not receive a letter from thee this week I thought I would write to thee. I expect the reason is because the [illegible] is filled with snow have you had any sleighing yet we have now. it is now snowing very hard and there is a great pile in the corners of our yard. Effa went home last night and we do not know how she will get home but thee does not know who Effa is. she is Van Houten’s daughter she lives with us now and we like her very much. has thee gone a skating yet and how does thee enjoy thyself is Wm Garrigues as strict as he was Miss Field is very if we miss"
On back of document on left:
"two in any of our lessons we have to stay after school and recite it I want Father to let me go to boarding school in the spring but I don’t expect he will. Achsah Draper, Anna Wirts and George were down here to call yesterday. Achsah had a party a week ago tomorrow evening but we did not go. Augusta Hadley had one fourth day evening but we were not invited. We are much obliged to thee for the book “Settler’s Canada” it is a very interesting one I think did thee have time to read it while in the City I have read where the forest was afire I do not think thee could have got a more interesting one Cousin Mary sent our Mary “Parson’s Assistant” by Maria Edgeworth is has some very good stories in she sent me Uncle Tom’s"

"Cabin cards also a kind of paper weight, Jane a little bed easy chairs looking glass and baby in a wagon she has the dolls Cousin Mary White sent her they are just the things to put in her bed Willie has a little man going to market in a boat and his boat & in a wagon he has got two baskets of flowers it is very pretty he has a glass dog with a little basket in his mouth. Little George colt was harnessed up with prince Willie says 'he kicked up very bad' the baby grows very fast – he will soon walk a lone how glad I shall be for he is just wild to be on his feet Willis [Willie?] is writing to Cousin Willie Spackman to thank him for his presents he sent him some soldiers with a kind of aparatus to make them march thee will think I might found some other word but I couldn’t thee will think I am very scant of paper but mother had just such a piece I must close so goodbye from
