“March 18th 1853
Dear Brother Richard
It is now fourth day eve and I have but commenced a letter to thee. Father does not want thee to write on that note paper anymore for it give us such short letters. Aunt Margaret and Uncle George have got down next to use, their house looks very nice and they seem to be very happy there. I am glad they live there for they are such nice neighbors it makes it very pleasant for them for they and Abbeys can hear from California at the same time. They spent the evening here yesterday and just as they were going away we went out to bid them good bye when all at once we heard a great noise and on coming in found it to be willie he had been sitting on the table and went to get up the lamp slipped and table and all went over for a wonder it did not break the lamp or spilled the oil all over the carpet"

"and on some of the cards cousin Mary sent me for a Christmas present, perhaps Mrs Birdsall will have a room fixed up for her to give Drawing lessons at our school how I love to draw I drew some of the pictures from my cards but did not succeed very well till the last one but I never took lessons for drawing heads. I want to if Mrs Birdsall teaches. thee cant imagine how George grows he walks all alone he has got two teeth to, he will laugh and stamp his little feet so cunning. when we are reading he will come up and laugh at us and pull our dresses. he will be eleven months old next sixth day, over a year old when thee comes home. what changeable weather. Yesterday and day before it was very stormy and blowy, but today it has been very pleasant. what kind of weather do you have nowadays. Marcella talks of going to John Jacksons to school if she goes I would like to go to but Father says he cannot afford it. did thee know Cousin Lizzie had a picture for sale it is a beautiful one the price is twenty dollars it a picture...” [Letter ends, part half of second page it missing].
