“Elba 5 Mo 6 1829
Esteemed friend
R.P.Hunt, thine of the first inst. came to hand yesterday, and being in a great hury I could not write immediately—Crosby called on me soon after I wrote to thee and stated that he must have money before he returned or his property must or would be sold. I spent 3 or 4 days in search for money but could find none to answer his immediate necessity without giving nearly an hundred pr. cent, which he done or at least he gave his note for 80 dollars due in four months for $60 or 6% which must be deducted out of the 50 which he offered having only 30 yet to be deducted I shall have to hear from or see him before I can give thee a positive answer I had (from information rec’d in thy last before this) given up the idea of receiving any assistance from thee soon and informed him so—I should like thee could write immediately on the rec’t of this and say whether the money could not be had for the thirty dollars premium which was all he could afford to loose I feel anxious to get it out of his hands into thine which would secure what I owe thee, then Levi and I could come to a settlement which is to me very desirable for at present his and my business lays at loose ends
