Description
Deutsch: The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a joint German-US space science project. Carrying a 2.5-metre telescope inside a modified Boeing 747SP, the airborne observatory performs astronomical observations in the infrared and submillimetre wavelengths, high above the disturbance of Earth's atmosphere. The scientific objective is to understand the development of galaxies and the formation and evolution of stars and planetary systems from interstellar clouds of gas and dust.

DEUTSCH: Das Stratosphären-Observatorium für Infrarot-Astronomie (SOFIA) ist ein gemeinsames deutsch-amerikanisches Vorhaben zur Erforschung des Weltalls. Mit dem in eine modifizierte Boeing 747SP integrierten 2,7 Meter-Teleskop werden astronomische Beobachtungen im Infrarot- und Submillimeter-Wellenlängenbereich weitgehend oberhalb der störenden irdischen Lufthülle durchgeführt. Schwerpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Zielsetzung ist die Erforschung der Entwicklung von Milchstraßensystemen sowie die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Sternen und Sonnensystemen aus interstellaren Molekül- und Staubwolken.
