“Waterloo 6 mo 25 1824
Respected Friend
D. Merritt & Son I rec’d yours of the 21st Instant Informing me you had not rec’d one bushels of the wheat I ship’d you last fall. I have since seen the Ruscos and Capt Gregory one of the capts running one of their Boats who tells me that about the 25th may he took on board of his Boat at Schenectady about 100 bags of Wheat that before he reach’d Troy his boat was injured and dare not cross the river. he went twice to your Store and Sent 3 times to see one of you that the Juniour partner of your firm afterward [inserted] came acrost the River opened Some of the bags of Wheat examined it and said it was superior promised if he would have it stored you would send your [Schooner?] and take it to your mills. that he stored apart in a grocery the remainder in Patteson & Harts Store under the promise you would send and take it away in a few days that apart say about 50 Bus yet remained in D G & W Store Schenectady. Rusco says he has now given the Capt Running his other boat orders to take that to you as well as the"
On back of document [continuing sentence] :
"the Bags of Wheat if you had not taken them. I hope you have receiv’d the wheat before this. you wished to Know whether the Ruscoes were responsible . they carry on the wheel Wright & Blacksmith business and run two Canal Boats and as to their being [inserted] accountable there is no doubt as I have their Recept for the wheat in good order promising to deliver it in like good order at Your Mills in May. I have shiped to you [p?] the Erie Canal Transportation Co pr order of Capt Phelps 1973 18/60 Bushes Wheat and 100 Bbls Flour (since you need the 222 Bbls p Capt Chamberlain) I have wheat Enough in the Several mills to make abt 7 1/10 Bbls Flour Which I shall soon have ready for you. I have not got any Wheat Lately as the price is 8/ p Bus and you think that too high what wheat I may buy through the season if you like I will send it all to you on the Same terms and draw for the pay at 30 days after I get a load with out Interest I remain your friend
