The remains of the Western edge of thisgreat wave are present to-day in Finland, inscattered Letts and in Bulgars, races andtongues of a distant and diverse kinship.Look at the earlier map of Poland and youwill see Lithuania still holding its place.When the Tartar horde ebbed, Lithuaniawas gone. Into the vast open space leftRuthenian and Russian poured. Of allthe great migrations, which begin near thePacific and end two-thirds of the way be-tween the Ural and the Bay of Biscay, theonly racial one that has moved eastward isthe Russian. The great river plains of Rus-sia in the south and its northern forests wereswept again and again by Tartars. To putit in its most general shape, the Asiatic besomof destruction swept what is now Russiaabout 2400 B. C.; just before and after theChristian era and 1200 years later.
