The Kautilya Society is a non-profit organization based in Varanasi and founded in 1998 by persons who believe that dialogue and partnership among people and cultures and further peace, development and mutual understanding. The common objectives of its members is to promote dialogue and cultures among people and cultures across the world, support pedagogic and development initiatives. Its panel of experts and volunteers specialise in varied fields of education, culture, sustainable development, environment protection, conservation architecture, media, sociology, philosophy, communication, human rights, arts and handicrafts.
In the field of development, the Kautilya Society supports global partnerships and networking for local development based on stakeholder participation and protection of local cultural, architectural and environmental heritage, especially in the city of Varanasi. Its projects include research, social documentaries, networking and lobbying for policy changes, sustainable urban planning, historic city centre management. The organisation has also filed a public interest litigation against the State and local governments demanding the implementation of existing heritage legislations, and the integration of these into the urban and town planning act of the city. In the field of culture, it promotes Indian culture and creates moments of contact among organisations and peoples from diverse cultures, through research projects, networking, seminars and cultural events. This includes academic interaction as well as responsible tourism. In the field of education, the Kautilya Society develops global partnerships to mobilize human resources and funds for improving the quality of the learning environment and curricula in Indian schools for the rural and marginalised populations. It has developed an online resource base and course modules (including online, audio-video) on development education that include awareness building on cooperation projects and managing cooperation projects. These resources are especially made available to train small organisations in raising and managing funds for development aid. With the aim of supporting responsible development, the Kautilya Society has developed a unique approach of local development based on the preservation and revalorization of local resources.
