Description
English: Front page of the April 11, 1919, issue of the Mexican newspaper Excélsior, one of the oldest running newspapers in Mexico. The top headline reports a pivotal moment in the Mexican Revolution: the assassination of General Emiliano Zapata, the Mexican revolutionary from the State of Morelos who fought against the government since the beginning of the Revolution in 1910, doing so on behalf of the Mexican peasantry whose lands were seized through corruption and violence. The headline reads "Emiliano Zapata Dies: Zapatismo is Dead" ("Murió Emiliano Zapata: el zapatismo ha muerto"). Other headlines at the top address the visit of representatives of the most important newspapers of Chicago, USA, to Mexico City and their meeting with President Venustiano Carranza, and the purchase of "important oil properties" of Mexico by the British government.
