Summary
[edit]DescriptionProtected by a King.jpg |
The Feral goats of Scotland were protected by an act passed by Robert The Bruce. He was being hunted by soldiers and hid in a cave by Loch Lomond . A herd of goats arrived and started brousing by the mouth of the cave. When the soldiers arrived the fugitive King-to-be heard them discussing searching the cave for him, but decided that if there was anyone in there, the goats would not have hung around, so didn't bother. The relieved and appreciative Bruce, on gaining power, forbade anyone from harming the wild goats. Surely the earliest Scottish wildlife legislation ? Descendants of the domestic goat they now are truly wild. Normally they like to roam the hills in small heard, mate in the autumn and the kids are born in January.
